The Heinz Fellows Program offers an extraordinary, year-long opportunity for forward-thinking, social justice-oriented individuals who are interested in advancing equity in education. Fellows will work in urban schools in collaboration with teachers, staff and school leaders to support students in academic, social, and emotional growth while building knowledge and skills necessary to work in urban contexts.Build knowledge, attitudes, disposition, skills and leadership to better understand and more effectively support students in Pittsburgh’s urban schoolsDevelop skills in five key competencies, including (1) urban context, (2) tutoring and teaching, (3) mentoring and social support, (4) participatory action research, and (5) arts and technologyEngage with local community organizations, school officials, parents and familiesParticipate in professional development opportunities such as educator forums, monthly brown bag discussions, professional conferences, and bi-annual lectures from urban education expertsLearn through weekly seminars led by Center for Urban Education (CUE) faculty and experts in the fieldEngage in reflective, critical discussion with colleaguesParticipate in a sustainable, action research based projectEarn a competitive stipend for participation and a certificate from CUE upon completing the program
