412Connect is a online platform to connect university students to marginalized communities through the eyes of insiders (e.g a community leader, a nonprofit that is already working with the community, etc), or within an experiential learning context (e.g focus on neighborhood food security). Through a scavenger hunt structure, 412Connect encourages students to see the insider’s view of the assets, relationships, history, and richness of the community. 412Connect was initially created to support Black owned businesses, and expanded more generally to support marginalized communities after working with the Riverside Center for Innovation to include Pitt’s Homewood Community Engagement Center, and a number of curricula within the university. 412Connect works with a community curator to determine a theme, the scope of responsibilities, and the timeline of the scavenger hunt. While internally, the team sets up community meetings with potential participants and curators to explain the scavenger hunt, data needed, timeline, legal, output, etc. We believe that this is mutually beneficial: consumers have much to gain from what these businesses have to offer, and these new consumers can make a difference for the businesses during these difficult economic times. Version 3.0 is aimed at allowing multiple classes to empower their students to experience the world in the same academic learning context in which they experience their academic classes, with a peer tutoring component aimed at encouraging students to learn about local businesses and places of interest.One example of an experiential learning class that will utilize 412 Connect is Professor Kay Shimizu’s Local and Global Food Policy class. This class explores the world of food and agriculture, shedding light on the political aspects often overlooked by social scientists. Students will acquire the necessary knowledge to comprehend and assess the various policies and suggestions made by the food industry, consumer organizations, politicians, government regulators, and other food-related interest groups. In context of 412 Connect, the class will strive to grasp and reconsider the repercussions of food policies through an Oakland scavenger hunt. The scavenger hunt will illustrate the broader gastroscape, or food establishments of the Oakland community, identifying gaps and opportunities within a food desert and how policy at various levels has influenced the gastroscape. Students will then extend their insights to global scenarios.
